Significato della canzone
Nella cultura pop e giovanile degli anni '50 e '60, "quadrato" significava "soffocante" o "antiquato", mentre "hip" significava il contrario: "aggiornato" o "di moda".
Negli anni '60 gli uomini portavano sempre i capelli corti, le donne non mostravano mai la pelle nuda oltre alle mani e al viso. Nella terminologia "hippy" (da cui "hip") ciò veniva chiamato "essere quadrati", con connotazioni negative di perdita di individualità. Ribellandosi a questo, gli uomini si sono fatti crescere i capelli lunghi mentre uomini e donne in generale hanno iniziato a indossare abiti colorati e mostrare i loro corpi. Nella generazione successiva, dopo che la cultura punk aveva accolto il non-conformismo nella sua filosofia anarchica e nichilista, l'idea di "essere quadrati" ha chiuso il cerchio e ha assunto connotazioni positive. Quindi il testo di questa canzone è rivolto alle persone della generazione hippy, dicendo che è "hip" (cool/di moda) indossare un abito e avere i capelli corti.
